Del Mar is a haven for resourceful surfers seeking waves all year round. With a broad swell window open to most swell directions, there’s a great chance of finding a good ride within the city limits. The beach faces almost due west, receiving swell energy from the southwest, west, and northwest. Despite the growing crowds, the diversity of waves in Del Mar offers the ability to find fun and rideable waves almost any time of year without the constraints of thick crowds. Water temperatures range from 57°F in winter to 77°F in summer, recommending a 3/2 full suit for winter and trunks for summer.
South Beach
The southern end of Del Mar offers over half a mile of rock-bottom reef, providing fun waves at different reef outcroppings between 4th and 15th Streets. The most frequented spots with consistent surf are 11th St and 15th St, thriving on swells in the 220-280 degree range with tides below 4 feet.
Main Beach
The middle section comprises a one-mile stretch of beach breaks, where fun and uncrowded peaks can often be found, usually in a different location from one day to the next. While enjoyable on most swells and mid-level tides throughout the year, overhead waves tend to be mostly closed-out on this stretch of beach and during extreme low tides.
North Beach
The northern stretch offers a unique wave area, with the San Dieguito River meeting the Pacific Ocean, providing consistent sandbars when the river is flowing. Reef outcroppings to the north of the river extend to the Del Mar border with Solana Beach, offering some of the better large wave riding opportunities in Del Mar during northwesterly swell events.
