San Diego’s Record-Breaking Housing Construction

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune

In 2023, San Diego County experienced more housing permits than in the past 17 years, with 11,673 building permits issued marking a substantial 21% increase from its previous years. According to the Construction Industry Research Board, the majority of this growth was in multifamily buildings, with 9,100 permits including apartments, condos, and townhouses, while 2,573 permits were for single-family homes including accessory dwelling units. This increase comes after years of underbuilding, with the region needing to catch up to meet demand.
