Fenestration involves designing and placing windows, doors, and other openings on a building’s exterior. Properly positioned doors help control how people move through a home and keep it secure. Exterior doors, usually made of wood or metal and about 1⅜ inches thick, come in various styles, including flush, panel, sliding glass, and storm/screen doors.
Common Door Types
- Flush Doors – Made with hardwood face panels on solid or hollow cores. Solid cores are ideal for exterior use due to better insulation and warp resistance, while lighter hollow cores are used inside.
- Panel Doors – Suitable for both interior and exterior, these doors have stiles and rails framing flat or raised wood panels, sometimes combined with glass.
- Sliding Glass Doors – Feature fixed and sliding panels within a wood or metal frame, similar to window sashes, holding single or insulating glass.
- Storm and Screen Doors – Storm doors have fixed glass for weather resistance or both glass and screens for ventilation. Screen doors are used in mild climates. Combination doors offer interchangeable panels, and self-storing storm doors have a sliding insert system.
